A mid-century home in Portland, Oregon:
Mid-century homes are defined by a kind of quiet openness. The designs from that era typically prioritize flow, light, and restraint, allowing the architecture to do the work instead of decoration. These designs suggest a conversation with the outdoors through their inclusion of large windows and sliders that blur the boundary between inside and outside.
These beautiful aspects were muted in the former design, color palette and crowded layout. We performed an entire home update from exterior paint, landscaping, re-roofing, and updating the colors, textiles and furnishings of the home. On this project, we worked with what was already there and through the process of subtraction uncovered the home's hidden beauty.
Front Exterior

A faded mint green with sparse landscaping and roof that needs replacement
Exterior - After

Navy with white trim, a privacy screen and white iceberg roses adds to the curb appeal of this small home
Living Room

Too many patterns going on in this room between stripes, Chevron and the linear barrel seating. It's also over furnished with little room for a flow that's comfortable. Finally the room is painted in taupe except for the wall with built-ins which is a robin's egg blue.
Living Room - After

A rich green with warm wood tones and white, handmade ceramics more closely resembles nature and is soothing visually. Resisting the urge to crowd this space with seating allows a spacious, less hectic flow.
Dining Room

This space is visually cluttered as a result of over-styling and a lack of editing. The brown brick of the fireplace also makes the room feels small and the curtains mute the natural light this room craves to express.
Dining Room - After

Removing curtains, keeping statement art relegated to one space and allowing the table surface to be simply decorated change the feel of this area dramatically.

The space feels so small with the oversized table and seating choices.
Painting the fireplace a soft greige helps with a sense of openness.

Guest Room

I'm all about taking chances with color from time to time but neon green was a miss.
Guest Room - After

We replaced lighting, window treatments and carpet and creating a more artfully appealing place for guests to find reprieve.
